Jyotish

Vedic astrologywith Dr. D.P. Shukla, in Udaipur and by phone

A reading of the sky at the moment you were born, used as a map for understanding yourself and the timing of your life, not as a verdict on it.

US$120, valid 30 days. In person in Udaipur or by phone.

About this session

Vedic astrology, known in India as Jyotish, is the ancient Indian system of reading the positions of the planets and their influence on a human life. Dr. D.P. Shukla grew up with it: he inherited the practice from his family, and his grandfather, Raj Jyotish Pandit Shiv Sevak Shukla, was astrologer to royal families.

A consultation starts from your birth chart, the unique arrangement of the planets at the time and place you were born. From it Dr. Shukla describes temperament, strengths and challenges, the patterns that tend to repeat, and how the current planetary periods may colour the months ahead.

It may suit you if

  • You are weighing a decision about work, a relationship or a move and want to think about its timing.
  • The same difficulty keeps returning and you want another way to understand it.
  • You are curious about Jyotish and want to hear it explained by someone raised in the tradition.
  • You have had a Western astrology reading and want to see how the Vedic view compares.

What the session involves

Your birth chart

Dr. Shukla reads the chart drawn from your date, time and place of birth: the rising sign, the placement of the nine grahas across the twelve houses, and the relationships between them. This is the basis for what he says about personality, purpose, strengths and difficulties.

Timing and transits

Vedic astrology gives great weight to planetary periods and transits. Dr. Shukla uses them to discuss the timing of significant events and choices in areas such as career, relationships and wellbeing, so you can plan with more awareness.

Karma and growth

The tradition treats the chart as a reflection of karma, the law of cause and effect. Part of the session looks at the patterns your chart suggests and what you can do about them through present choices.

Guidance, not instruction

Dr. Shukla's stated approach is to use astrology to empower people rather than dictate their lives. You remain free to decide. Where it helps, he may suggest practices such as meditation, yoga or changes to routine.

The sky at the hour of your birth

Your lagna changes with the hour

As the Earth turns, the twelve rashis rise one after another on the eastern horizon, each for about two hours on average. The sign rising at the moment you were born, your lagna, anchors the whole birth chart. That is why your birth time matters. The marker on the left of the dial is the eastern horizon.

His story

“What a wonderful experience with Dr Shukla. He was kind and warm and gave a great reading. I'd never experienced Vedic astrology before, but very cool to see how it agrees with western astrology. He made some very auspicious predictions as well and was an interesting person to talk to. Hare Krishna!”

What details do I need to share?

Your date, exact time and place of birth. The time matters because the rising sign and house positions change every couple of hours.

How is Vedic astrology different from Western astrology?

Both use the planets and the twelve signs. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is aligned with the fixed stars, while most Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is aligned with the seasons. Vedic astrology also places strong emphasis on planetary periods (dashas) for timing.

Can a reading tell me exactly what will happen?

No reading can guarantee an outcome. A consultation offers a perspective on tendencies and timing that you can weigh alongside your own judgement and, where relevant, professional advice.

Can I consult from outside India?

Yes. Sessions can take place by phone. Mention your country and time zone when you book.
